Tanpopo Ramen & Sushi Restaurant is rated 4.6 out of 5 stars, based on 65 reviews!
I finally found an authentic ramen restaurant that reminds me of home! Restaurant was clean and staff is friendly! Just hope there's more selection of ramen, BUT I still had a great experience!
This place changed names a little while back, but it is the same place with the same owners and chefs as the previous - Le Bistro Shanghai. I have recommended this place over and over, because it is hands down, the best chinese food I have ever had. Everything is made fresh when you order, unlike most Chinese food restaurants. And yes, they still have the same items that they used to, doing traditional Chinese dishes. The owners are super nice and friendly and the place is laid back and cozy. My only knock would be that their dinner/entree prices are slightly high for Chinese food. However, their lunch specials and prices are still the best deal. Bottom line is, this is literally the best Chinese food I have ever had.
Average tasting food, but excellent customer service! We arrived to eat dinner just 30 minutes before they closed that evening, but it wasn't a problem. The owner came out to greet us and asked if we were satisfied with the meal. Very nice employees. Would certainly eat there again in the future!
Both the sushi and the ramen are fantastic! I try to go about once a week either for the sushi lunch roll special or the ramen, and have never been disappointed. The owner is so nice and always checks on customers to make sure everything is going well, and the wait staff is great.
What a great find this place is! Since discovering this place two weeks ago, I have already gone three times. You MUST try the Spicy Miso ramen (just trust me) and Jajangmyum. So delicious I just can't get enough - just flavorful enough and not too salty at all. The Cherry Blossom roll was pretty tasty too, but the noodles are the star players at this restaurant (I'd come here for ramen over Red Light Ramen any day - more authentically delicious flavor, cheaper, bigger portions). Despite all the other reviews mentioning the Pork Belly Buns (which were alright), I suggest skipping these and getting a side of fried rice with your ramen.
What a great find, this was our first time visiting. The kimchee was the best I ever had. We found it was the owners grandma's recipe. The soup was very fresh and flavorable.
Just tried this place for the first time last week and have already gone back! The sushi is very good.
Had a wonderful experience at Tanpopo while visiting family in Milwaukee. The only thing keeping my review at 4 stars instead of 5, is the fact that all of the ramen is meat based. I was really excited to get a huge bowl of "big city" ramen, but they do not offer any options without animal broth. THEY DO offer quite the array of other vegan/vegetarian options and my party ordered those and they were fabulous. Our server was extremely friendly and efficient. We ordered Japanese beer with our lunch and left very satisfied with the quality, portion size and flavor.
Very delicious food, very filling! This obviously used to be a fast food joint, so take it in stride. This is also a favorite of groups of 18-21 year old girls who torture the waitstaff with their impossible "split the check" demands, so treat your waitstaff right. Will be going there again to try different types of their ramen. The seafood ramen was a favorite.
We had a great experience here. Stopped in on a Saturday night for a ramen fix, and got a table right away. Staff was friendly and the place was clean.
We started with the Cherry Blossom roll and Pork Belly Spring Rolls. Would order both again.
The heat on the Spicy Dan Dan was perfect. The Tonkotzu (?) was very savory and the noodles were perfectly chewy.
Was sad when Tochi moved to West Bend. But I am happy to say this our new ramen joint!
Pretty good! Not a lot of choices for ramen in Milwaukee, this one is closer to me and very satisfying. I had the spicy Dan Dan, it was the right amount of heat with two large slices of pork belly and ground pork. You can tell the broth was homemade rich tonkotsu broth however I think the noodles were probably pre made from somewhere else. They were just okay and not as fresh and chewy as I would have liked. Overall a good find though!
We ordered the Seafood ramen & sizzling plate Yakisoba. Best ramen & Yakisoba we had in a long time!
Very good! Quite a wide selection, noodles, rice, sushi. Great atmosphere and super friendly staff. We will definitely be making a return visit!!!
From Las Vegas (home of amazing sushi, ramen, Asian food). Every single time I'm in Wisconsin, I come here as often as possible! They remember my name, my daughter's name, and are so appreciative of a loyal following. Fresh food, generous portions, personalized service.... I could go on. Going to sleep full and happy after a long travel day!
Couldn't have asked for a better dinner
The ramen was excellent and so was the fried rice
By far the best place to go with my Filippino wife for some good soups for her. It is my favorite place to go for my two favorite Korean dishes (bimbim bap and beef bulgogi). This place does not look like a 5 star restaurant from the outside but believe me, the inside is very comfortable and more interesting than any other asian establishment I know of in the Milwaukee area. It is void of the corporate stigma and is obviously run by a dedicated family. The menu has something for everyone and has many more surprises I'm sure I'll enjoy in the future. The owner seems to always be there the times we visit and always comes out to insure we are happy with our meals. Very personable and the wait staff is top notch. I will go back anytime I get the chance.
Had a waiter named Antonio. He did a good job explaining the menu, food and suggested some items. Had sushi and ramen soup. Best combo ever! Keep up the good work Antonio!
Great sushi... I was a little doubtful as this sushi restaurant is in the Midwest, however it was great! More so, our waiter, Marco, was super nice and professional. We will come back again before I go home to Hawaii. We had the crabby Wasabi, Dragon Roll, Cherry Blossom Roll, and also Tonkotzu Ramen, they were all incredibly good...really impressed. I am a Japanese American and have been to Japan many times and the ramen was authentic and perfectly done ! Thank you.
Great place for sushi and other Japanese food. Nice wait staff and quite atmosphere. Hidden gem in New Berlin.
The Soosh is standard. But the Ramen is pretty good. I lived in Japan for a few years so it doesn't quite hit the mark how I want it to, but don't get me wrong it is the same way the "burger joints" in Japan left me hanging a bit. Still good, but just not perfect.
I am in love with this place.
I stopped here with friends as a spur of the moment thing. I tried the ramen and my friends got sushi. Everything was so delicious, I didn't want to stop eating. Everything I or any of my friends I have brought here have tried is delicious, I have never been underwhelmed.
I am a vegetarian. There are several vegetarian options for ramen, sushi, and other things. The spicy yogi vegan rolls are delicious and very filling! I also enjoy the miso ramen (but ask for a vegan broth) and it's very very good.
Everything tastes very fresh. My boyfriend has had almost every piece of sushi they make and hasn't disliked any. He really enjoys the eel avacado and California with crunch rolls.
The staff is nice too. The owner is very friendly and now recognizes my boyfriend and I and knows our name. She greets everyone and will have a conversation with you and is very inviting. There have been some younger newer staff on occasion who are not great.. they aren't terrible but mostly just awkward.
Wait times for food can be a bit slow, but it is completely worth it. But don't come here on a busy night expecting to be in and out quickly.. it just will not happen.
I eat here almost twice a week now which I have never done with any other restaurant in my life. I have brought so many friends and family there and gotten others obsessed with it. I really recommend it!
Great staff! I only come to Wisconsin a few times a year, but when I do, I eat here multiple times! Last time I was there, I walked in after 6 months being away and they all said "Amy! How are you?!" Talk about customer service! Great rolls!
I was not pleased with where I sat, as it was very cold. Once I got past that and ate my Shrimp Tempora; California rolls and my husband had Chicken Fried Rice, we immediately were pleased. Very good portion size.
Was pleasantly surprised. The outside is sketchy looking but don't let that fool you, they have some of the best sushi for the price in Milwaukee. The waitstaff was nice enough but I got one water glass start to finish, so we got a wee bit thirsty. Overall an excellent experience and we're looking forward to eating here again.
Great food love this place will be back tomorrow lol great quality food and great prices
Delicious! ! Treat yourself to great food and cozy atmosphere! :) Hard to get in the driveway but......go
Food was excellent, EXCELLENT! The manager had the kitchen custom prepare vegetarian steamed buns with kimchi instead of bbq pork. Also great vegetarian ramen and a very NON vegetarian but also tasty Dan Dan Noodle.
Wish it were closer to Milwaukee, but it is totally worth the drive for yummy ramen! I am only giving it four stars because of the ambiance, it felt a little awkward eating in the dining room so we opted for the sushi bar.
This is a great little gem. DO NOT let the DRIVE thru fool you. Food was great. The tempura was fresh and light...as it should be. And served on a boat dish!!
The signature sushi rolls look as amazing as they tasted. This is the best of both worlds....I love ramen and my husband likes sushi, so both got what we wanted.
Will come again and try other specialties.
It was a nice place ate there with my sisters and wife, food was amazing and the place was clean. For us it was on par with our favorite sushi hangout in Glendale, WI called Samurai.
When we first visited Tanpopo a year ago, they had just opened...and it showed. Their sushi rolls tasted fine but were huge and difficult to eat and the ramen (my husband and I both got the tonkatsu which we expected to be a flavor explosion based on our other experiences eating ramen) was pretty tasteless. We had to add lots of salt to coax even an ounce of flavor out of the broth and the toppings were weirdly cold and note-note. The only saving grace was the pork.
I have been here twice in the last few weeks and all I can say is, wow, what a difference a year makes! Our first time back, my husband and I ordered identical bowls of tonkotsu ramen. Both bowls were piping hot and filled nearly to the top with perfectly springy ramen noodles, menma, nori, pork belly, black mushrooms and flavorful, porky, fatty broth. Every bit of it was perfection, down to the marinated soft-boiled egg. The only thing that could've made it better was the little swirly fish cake you normally see in ramen bowls.
The second time around the customer service was ehh but the food was still good. We tried the spicy dan dan and it was awesome, along with the pork belly buns which were a tad too salty but not horribly so.
Overall, this place has more than earned the 4 stars in this review. I will be back soon!
My husband and I get take-out a couple times a month from Tanpopo. Staff is wonderful. Sushi is delicious!
Excellent staff, great sushi, decent atmosphere.
Tanpopo Ramen has great ramen, good sushi, and quality Americanized Chinese food staples at great price. While the location and exterior make it seem like Tanpopo shouldn't be the best ramen place in Milwaukee, the food speaks for itself. Anyone who loved Le Bistro Shanghai, the owner's previous restaurant at the location, will be happy that the core of that menu remains, and anyone who wanted something more adventurous and authentic has plenty of awesome new options. I've eaten here a number of times and have always been impressed by the quality of the food and service, I'd highly recommend it.
Very good ramen quality and varieties. The sushi and other dishes are worth a visit as well. Prices are very reasonable and the staff is friendly. I stop here whenever I am in the area.
That was very good.
Quiet Sunday lunch with my daughter. Spring rolls crispy and full of flavor as well as goyoza.
Spicy Dan Dan had just the right amount of heat and great flavor. Glad we found Tanopopo, we WILL be back!
Told you we'd be back!!
Ramen was consistently great.
Had two rolls that were very good as well

Easily my favorite sushi and Ramen places I've ever been to. The owner is my favorite person there, so kind and remembers who you are after a few visits, the sushi it freaking amazing, and super cheap! The lunch specials are by far the best deals in Milwaukee and so filling. Don't get me started on the Ramen. Delicious, filling, flavorful. Everything you can ask for. Highly suggest going there for lunch if you get the chance!
I really like this restaurant. I've been there five times now and have enjoyed each thing I've ordered. The wait staff is very friendly and helpful, I found the place to be clean and well-appointed and the food is really good. Definitely try it!
Awesome. Since Tochi abandoned Milwaukee (wtf?), we decided to try this place. It did not disappoint! I love the vibe of this place-it's like a souped-up Hardee's...not the pretentious hipster vibe like that other place. The spicy miso ramen was dope. Can't wait to come back!
Stopped by with a group of fellow yelpers a few months back. The restaurant itself has a feel as if it is a chain restaurant (not a bad thing) - the logo and interior are definitely well branded - that is to say, if I ever saw another Tanpopo somewhere, I would absolutely recognize it.
The restaurant is clean - and the decor is Asian flare. The space is large, definitely enough to fit multiple families or large parties. The menu also has a lot of variety ranging from safer items (pot stickers) to more adventurous items (balls of octopus). Our party had different experiences with ramen - which is the main thing we came here to try. We did, however, try some of the appetizers while we waited. I am totally a fan of their kani salad and the fresh salmon apps they served.
As far as ramen, they do have different types. I went with the tonkotsu style and it was "just good". Not mind blowing by any means, but it was a decent blend of flavors in there.
I can't say it beats out RLR for me, and since it is a ways a way from where I live, I'm not sure how often I'll make the hike out there, but I would absolutely return if I'm in the hood!
Yummy, yummy, yummy! Awesome sushi! Firecracker, cherry blossom, crabby wasabi, lettuce wraps, cream cheese wonton - all delicious! Very friendly, personable staff and owners. Came from out of town and my friend is always talking about this place so we had to go. So glad we did!!
This place is awesome! Tasty food--I tried one of their Ramen dishes and the house salad with avocado and tofu. Both were very good, with not-too-big, not-too-small portions, and the price was fair as well. The black tea comes with free refills, which was nice. The red bean ice cream is a must have. Our hostess, Rachel, was very nice and though I didn't catch our waiter's name, he was attentive and polite. One thing I appreciated was that the place was heated well, since we went on a cold day and were seated in the area under a glass roof (I believe the building was once a Wendy's). The decor is very pleasant, and there was classical music in the background. Our only complaint was that we were charged for a green tea refill that we never asked for or got, but all-in-all, great experience. Plan to go back soon.
I want to be clear from the beginning. I love ramen! Alright, I'll be honest, I am completely obsessed with ramen. I have books about it. I've seen Tampopo the movie. I've made my own at home, and not the instant kind. I've driven down to Chicagoland more than once, just to have ramen. So I have been giving this review quite a bit of thought, as I consider myself more that just the average ramen eater. However, given that we are in the Milwaukee area, I will be rounding up to 4 stars. If we were in Chicago, this would be a 3 star at best.
We have been here several times, and the ramen has been, well, inconsistent. On our multiple visits for ramen, we have had the Tonkotsu, Spicy Dan Dan and the Spicy Miso Ramens.
Out of the three, I have enjoyed the Spicy Miso the most. The standard toppings include pork belly, soft boiled egg, corn, menma, bean sprouts, negi and nori. This one is by far may favorite. It has a great combination of toppings, and the miso broth is flavorful.
The Tonkotsu and Spicy Dan Dan were also enjoyable. One of my favorite ramen toppings is the menma, so I always order it with extra. The bamboo shoots they use are awesome.
One of the most important elements in ramen, if not the most important, is the noodles. Twice, the noodles have been overcooked when the reached the table. To me, this is a big no no, as they continue to get softer as you work your way through the bowl. Also on our first visit, the broth was warm at best. This has not been an issue since.
While I am a fan of pork belly, even making my own. I feel like theirs could use a little work. First, they leave the skin on the belly. The skin ends up just soft and floppy adding nothing to the flavor. Secondly, the slices are really thin, so I guess I'm just not a fan. I would venture over to Tochi instead if I was really craving pork belly. All in all, when the noodles are done well, its not a bad bowl,
We have also tried the Takoyaki (octopus balls) which were very good. This is a menu item I have not seen a lot of places, so I do recommend trying it if you haven't. The balls are cooked well and I loved the sauce. We tried the pork belly buns, but for the same reasons as above, these will not be a re-order.
We also tried the yakisoba with chicken. The noodles were alright and the chicken was nice and tender, but it was nothing to write home about.
On our last visit, we did have our first sushi. The ordered just a simple yellowtail roll. The fish was fresh and nice sized for the roll. We will try more rolls on our next trip. So to wrap this one up, as I have a ramen addiction, I will be back to get my "fix" rather often.
We had a very positive first experience today. We went to try the Ramen but are now interested in going back to try some of the Sushi and other Japanese foods. The very cool thing is that this is pretty close to our home in the SW suburbs so no need to find parking in the city. I had the Jajangmyum and my Other Half had the Spicy Mazemen and we shared. We also shared an order of the Pork Belly Spring Rolls. Both of our Ramen dishes were a thicker broth and we don't claim to be experts in Japanese Food so were a bit surprised when the broth was not a "slurpy type" of Ramen dish. But, both were outstanding. My dish included both beef and shrimp but the stronger nature of the beef pretty much cancels out the flavor of the shrimp. This was not a bad thing, just an observation. The service was excellent and we saw several Japanese diners so I suspect things were pretty authentic. We will certainly return to try more dishes and to increase our knowledge of Japanese cuisine. The two sushi chefs gave us a friendly "thanks for coming," which made us feel welcome as we were leaving. We might sit right at the bar to ask the chefs more questions and learn more about the food.
My fiance and I went to Tanpopo for the first time tonight for our anniversary and it was AMAZING! The pork buns were delicious, the Japan roll was perfect and the ramen was out of this world. I got the Tonkotzu and he got the Spicy Dan Dan noodles and both were flavorful and well balanced. The pork belly was perfectly cooked and the the portions were generous. I cannot wait to go back!
I love this place! It is my special treat when my husband is out of town. I'll have a warm saki while I wait for my carry out order. The chefs and owner are always friendly and make good recommendations. I tried the eel last night, it was really good! Don't skip this place if you like sushi!
amazing the people are great you come in once and they remember you every other time they have good asian food
absolutly to die for
amazing

I've been here several times and was impressed right away but especially now after trying so many different dishes I really have to give it to Tanpopo.
I've tried the tonkotsu, spicy miso, a bit of the spicy dan dan, mazeman, ceviche appetizer, carpaccio app and more!
I want to come more times to try even more ramens and noodles! Cause there are still items I haven't yet tried.
And I know when I come here I'll definitely get a satisfying, good meal that a lot of effort was put into.
The owners are delightful and eagerly talk with you how they make their ramen or other foods. I was told that the pork broth takes about 14 hours but the chicken ramen only needs about 7. And the fact they even have chicken ramen! Variety, it's the spice of life!
And the mazeman -- seriously folks if you have or haven't had it here, please try it. I thought it was phenomenal!!
The kimchi side is a must with every meal so don't forget to order the kimchi!
Been here a few times now and I like it!
The first time I visited I got the spicy miso ramen. This one was just ok for me. I'm not a huge fan of pork belly in my ramen - I prefer it crispier, and sitting in a bowl of broth doesn't really lend to having crispy pork belly.
The second time I got the spicy dan dan. This ramen was much better for me. Love the soft boiled egg and all the add ins they include. If I go back I will definitely order this again.
Overall, it gets 4 stars because there is nothing like this nearby as a competitor, and I would come back again if I am craving some good ramen.
I have been here a few times and enjoyed it quite a bit. I've had the tonkotsu and the spicy dan dan, both of which I enjoyed greatly - they were nearly on par with some of the ramen I've had in the San Franscisco Bay Area. They were fully flavored and the ingredients tasted excellent. I've also had their pork belly buns (delectable) and their spring rolls - in general their Korean-fusion menu items are a fun twist on classic dishes that I've enjoyed greatly so far.
Great food, great prices, and the owners are very friendly and hard working. I've had the ramen and it's really tasty, and the salmon sushi is incredibly fresh!

The atmosphere isn't wonderful, but the portion sizes and delicious food makes up for it. They will cater to gluten free people but you have to ask. I had sushi and it was very fresh. My group ordered lots of non gluten free appetizers that they all loved. If I'm ever this far out again I will be back!
This place is awesome. I just moved to this area of town from the third ward where I had three trendy sushi restaurants within walking distance. The sushi here out does any of those restaurants. Always fresh, fast if you want it fast, but zero rush. Very cute environment and great sushi bar area. My favorite seaweed salad around! And owner is so nice and genuine. Don't drive out of your way when good Japanese sushi/noodle bowls are right in the neighborhood!
Who doesn't love ramen? It's like pho, but less emphasis on the tough parts of beef and more focus on plump slurp-able noodles and pork belly. We're well past the point where it's trendy, but Milwaukee didn't really take advantage when it was at its apex. Today, there's only a handful of places focusing on it in the city. Tanpopo is one of them, but it's also a well-executed one of them, offering plenty of rich fatty goodness in their tonkatsu. The sushi and tempura is solid as well. Moreso than you might expect from a restaurant that has a Wendy's-esque exterior on Highway 100. Although that's also part of appeal - it's easily accessible in a part of town that's not known for its good food. Based on the amount of work done, the quality of the food, and the effervescent owners, Tanpopo has a lot going for it, and I'm a fan.
Stopped in recently for a quick meal. To be honest I did so reluctantly but was surprised by the friendly service, nice atmosphere and well above average food. I plan to return.
Nicely decorated, attentive, friendly service, and good ramen, good takoyaki, good kimchee, and great fried rice; according to my Japanese husband, the best he has had since he moved to America. It is a bit of a trek for us coming from +/- 35 minutes out of town, but well worth the trip. Bear in mind, this is Wisconsin, so one tends to be easily impressed by what would be considered just ok elsewhere. I am no exception to said tendency.
I had the spicy miso ramen, which is a local specialty of the region where I lived in Japan for 6 years. Tanpopo's was different from what I was used to, using less vinegar/pickled condiments and chili oil instead of chili miso paste, but it was nevertheless very tasty and the noodles were boiled just enough to still have some chew left in them. The softboiled egg was perfection. The chashu was good, but fattier than I prefer, although my husband had no problem with it.
My husband had the tonkatsu ramen. He said he liked it. He is not famous for giving compliments. However, he raved about the fried rice he ordered as a side (not on the menu as a side dish, but it was off-peak hours, he asked, Tanpopo obliged). It was very simple and mild enough for our one-year-old to eat some, with what appeared to be just egg and scallions mixed in with soy sauce seasoned rice.
Anyway, Tl;dr: we'll be back. You should go.
Stopped here after taking kids to Helium Trampoline Park. I tried a ramen bowl. Everyone else tried a Chinese like chicken dish. We also got sushi rolls, gyoza, and another appetizer. The ramen was excellent. The Chinese dishes were standard. The sushi was quite good. With tip, we paid $105 for a family of 4.
The setting was a little cramped for 4. Tables are smaller than expected. Lots of them are under vents which blow air conditioning on someone directly. That makes me cold and I had to move. Maybe I'm just thin skinned?
There were several Asian customers ordering ramen so it seems people who know good ramen when they see it come. I'm naive re Ramen but seeing others enjoy it convinced me to try. Typically, I'd be safe and get teriyaki chicken. I am glad I didn't. As said, my dish was the best at the table.
I am formerly from Wisconsin, but live in San Francisco now, and have evolved into a big foodie. Yep, I just set the ground for my review. I was in town visiting my friend, and they suggested we eat here. Honestly, I was a bit skeptical...ramen and sushi in a 'burbs of Milwaukee, and good? Hard to beat coming from the sushi and ramen capitol of San Francisco! Well, ladies and gents, this place blew me away. The service was super nice, quick and friendly. The sushi was super fresh and delish, like a place back in SF;) The ramen was outstanding, probably the best I ever had, yes I said ever, I savor every drop of it. So yes, Yelpers on my next stop home, I am definitely stopping here for a sushi and ramen fix, and you should too! Cheers to the Badgerland!
After buying a bowl of their Ramen through their drivethru...I decided to eat in....Tanpopo does Japanese food right! The batter on their tempura was light and crispy. Their spider roll had a great combo of deep fried crab and vegetables with a nice sauce. If you are afraid of raw fish...this isn't. ..try it! I did have to have my favorite..white tuna...smooth..
Firm fish that doesn't taste fishy.
But if there is one thing I would recommend it is the takoyaki...what is that? Octopus balls! Pieces of octopus in a cooked and sauced ball.
We also had yakisoba and the pork Ramen (the broth is soooo good!)
Try tanpopo....you will taste Ramen as it should be!
I was totally blown away by how good the broth is. I've had some issues with slow service and the ambiance isn't anything spectacular, but frankly the ramen is so good that I really don't care.
Tanpopo is a nearly weekly stop for my husband and I. I'm always surprised when it's quiet and kind of slow inside. We lived in Japan for three years and the ramen here is pretty close. Not as rich as some I've tasted but still has amazing broth. The portions are hearty and always nice and hot. We've tried all the noodle dishes and they are all exceptional.
The spicy tuna roll with crunch is a must have. I think about that roll pretty much daily until I get it again. I've never had a similar roll but it's now my absolute go to when I'm not eating nigiri or sashimi. Always has a generous portion of nice minerally tuna inside.
The fried rice is also amazing. My husband eats the leftovers almost as soon as we get home. I love the hot tea. Really everything I've had I have enjoyed. The exception being the Takoyaki. The octopus inside is usually way too chewy. Bummer since I've missed it since coming to the USA. Still, not worth docking a star because everything is way too awesome here.
My only wish would be for this place to also serve Japanese style curry. It's a staple in a lot of restaurants there and a big time comfort food.
This place is a must visit.
Best sushi I've had yet! Within our group we tried about 7 different rolls and loved all of them!
*LOVE this place!
Excellent service excellent food great prices. We eat there almost every week!
